Pilicode's "Oorjayanam" project
The increasing consumption of energy, the increase in electricity costs, the tendency to over-dependence on fossil fuels, and climate change are the major challenges facing today's society. In this context, popular interventions that promote energy conservation and energy efficiency have become the necessity of the times.
It is in this context that Pilicode Grama Panchayat launched the "Oorjayanam" project. The project was implemented with the objectives of reducing unnecessary waste in electricity use, promoting the use of energy-efficient appliances, instilling energy conservation habits in every family, and guiding public institutions and commercial establishments towards energy efficiency.
This project, which integrated survey, awareness, training, technical suggestions, and public participation, created a popular model for energy conservation at the Grama Panchayat level. Along with controlling electricity consumption, the project made a significant contribution to reducing the financial costs of families, protecting the environment, and reducing carbon emissions.
"Oorjayanam" is a great model for effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and Goal 13 (Climate Action) at the local level. Therefore, this project is not only an energy conservation activity, but also an exemplary local governance initiative to achieve sustainable development through people's participation.
